หลักการใช้ a, an
1. ใช้ an นำหน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ a, e, i, o,uหรือออกเสียงสระไม่ว่าจะเขียนขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะก็ตามเช่น
an elephant, an hour, an umbrella, an apple 
2. ใช้ a, an นำหน้าคำนามเอกพจน์ที่นับได้เสมอที่มีความหมายเป็น"หนึ่ง"
She has a dog.
Give me an apple.
3. ใช้ a,anนำหน้าคำที่บอกอาชีพ
Junior's father is a doctor.
I want to be a teacher.
4. ใช้ a, an นำหน้านามเอกพน์ที่แปลเป็นต่อ...(หน่วย)
Oranges cost 50 baht a kilogram.5. ใช้ a กับการเจ็บไข้ได้ป่วยเช่น
a stomachache, a headache, a fever
I ate somtam at lunch and now I have a stomachache.
6. ใช้ a,anในประโยคอุทานตามหลัง what เช่น
What a nice dress!
What an old man!
เราจะไม่ใช้ a,anกับสิ่งต่อไปนี้ 
1.กับคำนามที่นับไมได้ (uncountable nouns)
2.ไม่ใช้นำหน้าชื่อวิชา ชื่อกีฬา ชื่อประเทศ ชื่อเมือง ชื่อมหาวิทยาลัย 
3.ไม่ใช้หน้าคำที่เป็นมื้ออาหาร breakfast, lunch, dinner
